Prezi – Cloud-based Zooming Web-based Presentation Tool

Prezi is a cloud-based presentation software and storytelling tool for exploring and sharing ideas upon a virtual canvas. Prezi is distinguished by its Zooming User Interface (ZUI), which enables users to zoom in and out of their presentation media. Prezi allows users to display and navigate through information within a 2.5D space on the Z-axis.
Prezi is a zooming web-based presentation tool that moves beyond the constraints of traditional slides. The zoomable canvas makes it fun to explore ideas and the connections between them. The result is visually captivating presentations that lead your audience down a path of discovery.
Text, images, videos and other presentation objects are placed on the infinite canvas and grouped together in frames. The canvas allows users to create non-linear presentations, where users can zoom in and out of a visual map. Zoom out to see the big picture and zoom in to see details — a bit like web-based maps that have changed how we navigate through map books.
Features:
  • Prezi is used as platform for bridging linear and non-linear information, and as a tool for both for free-form brainstorming and structured presentation.
  • Text, images, videos and other presentation media are placed upon the canvas, and can be grouped together in frames.
  • Users then designate the relative size and position between all presentation objects and may pan and zoom in and between these objects.
  • For linear presentations, users can construct a prescribed navigation path.

Online Security Tips and Advice – Google’s ‘Good To Know’ Campaign

google logo
Google started a new resource called ‘Good to Know‘ in the Google’s website that makes learning about security and privacy even easier for internet users. Google started this in association with the UK’s Citizen’s Advice Bureau.
Privacy policies and terms of service can often be long, complex and legalistic. Goal of the Good To Know campaign is to provide people with practical guidance, like how to select a safe password or keep their online accounts secure.
The new Good to Know website builds on the commitment to explaining things in simple language. The in-depth resources are still there, but google hope a one-stop-shop resource will make this information more accessible for everyone.

Good to Know contains tips to:

  • Stay safe online: Advice for staying more secure on the web and an overview of some of the security tools that Google offers.
  • Your data on the web and how it makes websites more useful: An overview of ways that websites can get to know your preferences and how this makes them more useful for you.
  •  Your data on Google and how it makes Google services more useful
: This section explains what information you share with Google when you use our products and services and how we use it to make your experience better.
  • Manage your data and what you share with websites and Google: Guidance on how you can manage the data you share online, both across the web and on Google services.

Five tips for online safety:

  1. Pick a strong password. One idea you can try is to choose a line from your favourite song, film or play, like “To be or not to be, that is the question”. Then use numbers, symbols and letters to recreate it: “2bon2btitq” is a password with quadrillions of variations. The more unusual the phrase you choose the better.
  2. Never reply to suspicious e-mails with your personal or financial information, and never enter your password after following a link from an e-mail that you don’t trust.
  3. Look for ‘https‘ and a padlock to check that a site is secure. When you go into a branch of your bank, you recognise the official staff by their name, their uniforms and the services they offer you. Having this level of reassurance shouldn’t be any different for online banking or other sensitive services.
  4. Always sign out and shut down your browser. Ever gone out for the day and left your front door wide open? Exactly. The same principle applies when you leave yourself signed in to online accounts on the computers you use.
  5. Use two-step verification for accounts that offer it, like Google and Facebook. Two-step verification adds an extra layer of security to your account by requiring you to have access to your phone – as well as your username and password – when you sign in. This means that if someone steals or guesses your password, the potential hijacker still can’t sign in to your account because they don’t have your phone.[source]

Google to Open Online MP3 Store to Challenge Apple and Amazon?

Google Logo
Google is in negotiations with the major record labels to expand its cloud music service and also open an MP3 store that would compete with Apple and Amazon, Newyork Times reports.
According to numerous music executives, Google is eager to open the store in the next several weeks before Apple’s latest cloud music program ‘iTunes Match‘ becomes operational. It would probably be connected to Google’s existing Music Beta cloud service, which lets people back up their songs on remote servers and stream them to mobile phones and other devices.
But it was unclear whether Google would be able to close the necessary deals with labels and music publishers in time to open a full-service store.
Music Beta was announced five weeks after Amazon opened a similar unlicensed service, Cloud Drive.

Dart – Google’s Programming Language for Building Web Applications

dart logo
Google introduced an early preview of Dart, a class-based optionally typed programming language for building web applications.
Dart targets a wide range of development scenarios: from a one-person project without much structure to a large-scale project needing formal types in the code to state programmer intent. To support this wide range of projects, Dart has optional types; this means you can start coding without types and add them later as needed. Google team says that Dart will be great for writing large web applications.
Dart’s design goals are:
  • Create a structured yet flexible language for web programming.
  • Make Dart feel familiar and natural to programmers and thus easy to learn.
  • Ensure that Dart delivers high performance on all modern web browsers and environments ranging from small handheld devices to server-side execution.
Dart code can be executed in two different ways: either on a native virtual machine or on top of a JavaScript engine by using a compiler that translates Dart code to JavaScript. This means you can write a web application in Dart and have it compiled and run on any modern browser. The Dart VM is not currently integrated in Chrome but google plan to explore this option.
The language comes with a set of basic libraries and tools for checking, compiling, and running Dart code, all of which will evolve further with your participation. Google have made the language and preliminary tools available as open source on dartlang.org.
